The American Sunbathing Association (A.S.A.), prospered during the next eight

years, but in 1941 the start of World War II interrupted the nudist movement. Following
the assault on Pearl Harbor, many nudists went off to war, resulting in the closure of . The movement managed to endure as a result of continued publications of the
Naturist. Eventually, the magazine’s name changed to Sunshine & Health. 24

After the Second World War nudism slowly started to take hold again, reemerging as a
stronger motion. Dlsley Boone, nicknamed Uncle Danny, continued to be the chief
executive of the A.S.A. By now, 1946, Boone monopolized the whole fkk movement.
The American Sunbathing Association was one of nine interlocking corporations
strategically managed by Boone. As noted by Johnson, other organizations comprised: The
Sunshine & Health magazine, The Sunshine Book Company, Sunshine Park Inc,

Commercial Distributors Inc., and the Sedgwick Art Institute, a school which empowered
students to participate in art classes outside at Sunshine Park. Boone’s reluctance to
delegate any of his ability to others resulted in many disgruntled members. 25 Boone
Commanded all of the mailing lists and managed to obtain enough proxies to outvote
everyone, thus enabling him to command the election of officials?6 When members

requested of the books, Boone turned them down stating the expense was not
Warranted? 7 Battle towards Boone continued to brew among the board members of the
A.S.A. The members successfully elected a brand new leader, Reed Suplee, just to be
disappointed by his resignation a few months after due to Boone’s unwillingness to let him
review the publications. Eventually in 1951, the A.S.A. backed by most of the organization members,
Compelled Boone to step down. Boone continued to affect the Nudist movement by staying
active in board matters and management of the corporations. He introduced a new
magazine, S.U.N., which stands for So/air Union Naturisme. Strategies were also announced
for a awesome international naturist organization. In spite of Boone’s resignation, he is still
considered the chief person responsible for the A.S.A., which continued on to become the
dominant naturist organization in America. By the end of the 20th century, an estimated 15
million individuals in 22 states were participated in Social Nudism. The American Sunbathing
Organization has since changed its name to The American Association of Nude Recreation
(A.A.N.R.), and now maintains more than fifty thousand members? 8

The subject of Social Nudism creates many differing viewpoints. Some people find
the behaviour deviant or strange, using labels for example wrong, unethical, and anti-social,
when referring to individuals choosing to participate in this lifestyle. Others, however, deem the
Behaviour as moral, ethical, and socially appropriate, insisting that social nudism functions to
Improve total well being. Where did these beliefs originate, and why do they last?
Much of what forms our societies and laws stems from religious views. Although
this study will not focus on the practices, theories, or beliefs of one specific faith, it
does admit the basis of faith as being a leading contributor to contemporary views
on nudism.
During early formative years of religious teachings, dominant views in Greek and
Roman cultures expressed actual matter as evil and only spiritual matters as good. This was
known as Gnosticism, and symbolized a negative view of what God had meant. It states
in the Bible, the book of Genesis 1:31, that “God saw all that he’d made, and it was really

good.” Many Christians believe this passage to be accurate but only in the context of happening
before the fall of Adam and Eve. The development of sin locations significant a weight, particularly
guilt and shame, upon human beings. It was not until Adam and Eve sinned that shame
would become a major controlling factor in peoples lives.

What effect does shame have on us? Many psychologists believe that shame is the
source of low self esteem, abuse, and illnesses like depression, paranoia, and sexual
Habits. According to Pastor Ted Roberts “Shame is a feeling of profound degradation that
convinces me there’s something fundamentally wrong with me …and that’s a killer. “

Hartman Fithian & Johnson, noted in their own publication, Fkk Society, that many religious leaders

are responsible for linking shame, with nudity and sin. As an example, the continuous
reminder that pre-marital sex and masturbation are erroneous, and hence sinful, implies that
these actions are black. Women, as opposed to men, are more easily criticized for
Participating in sex before marriage and hence more prone to feelings of shame. Nevertheless
does this mean that couples who choose to have a loving relationship without marriage are
deserving of shame? Maybe in the eyes of the church the answer is yes. More significantly
though, the true answer lies within our own selves. To cite another example,
As Pope John Paul II once declared:
